MGO = Manuka Power

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey so special.

Our research partner - Professor Thomas Henle (University of Dresden) and his team - discovered MGO as the magic ingredient in Manuka honey, a discovery long sought after in the science world.

In 2008 Manuka Health pioneered MGO testing as a more precise and reliable method of grading Manuka honey, based on this ground-breaking research.

Not all Manuka honey is created equal and MGO levels can vary greatly.  Every jar of Manuka Health MGO Manuka Honey is tested and certified for natural MGO content. The MGO number tells you how much MGO is in your jar of honey simple.

The amount of MGO in your Manuka honey is
directly related to its potency

MGO and UMF

Both MGO and UMF are trusted Manuka honey grading systems, and both measure MGO content.

Manuka Health is a proud member of the UMF association and our honey is both UMF and MGO certified.

Our iconic red MGO mark tells you how much MGO is in the jar (an indicator of its potency and power) and the UMF mark is an independent endorsement of New Zealand origin, quality and grade.

We've provided a handy correlation between MGO and UMF numbers here.
Manuka Health is also a member of the UMF Honey Association
